DNS leak test

Check if your DNS requests are protected

See whether your DNS requests follow your VPN connection or go to another DNS provider.

Checking your DNS requests…

We’re sending test lookups and checking which DNS servers answer them.

How to read your DNS test result

DNS appears protected
The detected DNS resolver appears to match your VPN connection. When AethoVPN is detected, your DNS requests appear to be routed through AethoVPN.
Third-party DNS detected
A public DNS resolver, such as Google or Cloudflare, was detected. This may be intentional if you use custom DNS or browser Secure DNS.
Multiple DNS resolvers detected
The test detected more than one DNS resolver. This can happen with custom DNS, browser Secure DNS, split tunneling, or proxy settings.
Possible DNS leak
Your ISP appears to be handling DNS requests while a VPN connection is detected. This may allow your ISP to see the domains you look up.

What is a DNS leak?

A DNS leak happens when your device uses DNS servers outside the protected VPN route. DNS is the system that looks up website names before they load. If those requests go to your ISP or another unexpected provider, they may reveal which websites you are trying to visit, even when your visible IP address is protected by a VPN.

Why DNS leaks matter

A DNS leak can reveal browsing signals, weaken VPN protection, and make your network easier to identify.

  • Your ISP may see DNS requests

If DNS requests go to your ISP, it may be able to see the domains your device asks to visit.

  • Your VPN protection may be incomplete

Your visible IP can look protected while DNS requests still leave through another provider.

  • Browsers or apps can bypass VPN DNS

Browser secure DNS, custom DNS, proxy rules, or split tunneling can send DNS lookups outside the protected VPN route.

  • Your location or network may be easier to infer

Unexpected DNS servers can reveal clues about your network provider, region, or routing setup.
