What can your ISP see depends on the sites you visit, whether HTTPS is active, whether DNS is encrypted, and whether you use a VPN. In general, your ISP can see the IP addresses you connect to, connection times, traffic volume, and unencrypted DNS queries. When HTTPS is working properly, it usually cannot read page content, passwords, or form entries directly.[1][2]

Cloudflare explains HTTPS simply: it uses TLS to encrypt data between your browser and a website.[1]But encrypted content is not the same as an invisible connection.
HTTPS can protect page text, search box entries, login passwords, shopping cart content, and downloads from being read directly in transit. The lock icon in your browser address bar shows that TLS is protecting the connection.[1]
Your ISP may still know that you connected to a specific IP at a specific time, or learn the domain through DNS queries. Encrypted DNS reduces DNS-layer leaks, but it does not hide every piece of connection metadata.[2]
A VPN puts the traffic between your device and the VPN server inside an encrypted tunnel. Local Wi‑Fi, hotel networks, and ISPs will usually see that you connected to a VPN server, not each site you visit afterward.

An ISP sits on the network path and mainly sees connection metadata. A website sits on the service side and can see what you do there: clicks, searches, logins, purchases, device fingerprints, cookies, and account data.

If you search through an HTTPS search engine, your ISP usually cannot see the exact keywords. It may still know that you visited that search service.
